What is biogas?

What is Biogas?

Biogas, which contains methane, is produced by the anaerobic digestion of organic material known as biomass. Many forms of biomass, also known as substrate, are suitable for biogas production. They include food waste, slurry and manure as well as crops and crop residues. Anaerobic Digestion (AD) is a natural process where, in the absence of air (anaerobic), biomass is broken down (digestion) by bacteria.

The biogas production process may be wet fermentation, dry fermentation or a combination of both, and begins when biomass is put inside a sealed tank called a fermenter. Naturally-occurring micro-organisms digest the substrate, which leads to biogas formation.

Biogas can be used to generate renewable heat and electric power which helps to cut fossil fuel use thereby reducing greenhouse gas emissions and lessening energy import dependency.

After fermentation, the remaining material is called digestate (liquid digestate or solid digestate) and is rich in nutrients so it can be used as fertilizer. The quality of the digestate may depend on the:
