Reducing Spongy End and Sunburn in Melon
Melons may either turn yellow and die or alternatively they are poorly developed with a spongy, soft feel at the stylar end. This end is also slightly pointed. Seed close to the disorder is poorly developed. Spongy end occurs as a result of poor pollination. Lack of boron can be the cause.
Additional cover of the fruit is necessary to protect against sunburn in hotter climates. Straw is often used as it allows air-flow but protects the fruit from direct sunlight.
